The purpose of this page is to allow you to
estimate the overall savings
that your organization/group could achieve by replacing a battery using
device with a non-battery/renewable energy device (in our case the NightStar
magnetic flashlight.
The numbers calculated here are for estimations only, and may not necessarily
reflect your actual situation. Please be sure check out the assumptions
that are listed below.
Go ahead put in a million - see how much landfill space the planet would save! Assumptions/Limitations The current battery calculations are based on replacing a single type of flashlight (ie. 2D Cell). If you have multiple types of flashlights, do an estimate of each type alone, and then add the results together for your overall savings estimate. This model also assumes that the cost/hour of the person is always the same, and that checking the batteries and changing the batteries take almost the same amount of time. It is also assumed that you are paying a premium for the disposal of hazardous waste - if you are just throwing them in the garbage, SHAME on you! They are a hazardous waste and should be treated as such. (If you don't pay for waste disposal, just enter a zero for landfill costs.) The following weights and volumes are used for batteries:
The volume figure for batteries has been estimated as if batteries are cubes that would stack neatly together in a landfill, since they are not the actual volume of batteries will be somewhat larger than the estimate. We encourage you to play around with this to see how changing the parameters will effect your savings. Once again, we stress that this tool is only to be used for estimating the cost and number of batteries that your organization/group might save by switching to a non-battery-using device. Due to the number of factors involved, it may not necessarily reflect your actual savings. Also note that your actual savings may be higher as this model does not account for the time or cost to replace broken devices. If you are checking on the NightStar flashlights, remember that NightStar flashlights have a 5 year gaurantee, so switching to NightStars would reduce the replacement cost for flashlights to almost zero.
